Cape Disappointment State Park, WA - Named for Captain John Meares’ first thwarted voyage to find the Columbia, Cape Disappointment is steeped in Northwest history.
We made our way to our first stop on the coast which was Cape Disappointment State Park in Washington. We passed over the super cool high Astoria Bridge and through some curvy roads into the park where we had a primitive spot. There are some spots with hookups we just didn't end up catching one of those. The campground has wonderful tall trees all around and it's a very short walk onto the beautiful beach with the view above from our first night after getting settled in and taking a walk. There was a bathhouse with one shower stall and some flush toilets.
We had a great day riding about 6 miles (each way) on the Lewis & Clark Discovery Trail which is a paved path that winds it's way between Illaco and Long Beach. It winds it's way through forest and along the sand dunes, beautiful grasses and trees with the ocean breeze keeping you cool. You also pass some cool things that talk about Lewis & Clark and give great information. Another day we went kayaking.
Our daughter, Kim, came up for a night and brought a scrumptious French almond orange cake to celebrate my birthday! We spent a wonderful day hiking to the Cape Disappointment Lighthous and enjoyed the vistas.
We loved watched the Brandt's Cormorants on the rocks below the lighthouse. The breeding adults were displaying bright blue skin on their throat.
We also went to the North Head Lighthouse which has just undergone an extensive exterior renovation and is just stunning. The views from there offer crashing waves against the rocks below.
One evening I watched a beautiful Bald Eagle in the Bay near the campground as well as the most adorable otter.
We had a wonderful time and were so glad to be here during the heat dome that just enveloped the entire region!
Nice otter 🐻
Why is it that whatever you go, they have extreme weather 😁?
Spectacular photos Alison. Looks like a beautiful area.
