Often there are clouds moving all around and hugging the tops of the mountains that surround Funchal, the capital of Madeira. One day we grabbed a clear day to ride the Teleférico do Funchal up to the top of the parish called Monte. The ride up was wonderful as we climbed slowly above the main part of the city and then up the side of the mountain.
When we reached the top we enjoyed the views and had a light lunch with pretty views of the canyon.
We decided to wait for another visit to walk the gardens that are up there and instead opted to hike our way back down so we could enjoy the gorgeous afternoon and views. It was quite tropical and rugged. The trail was a combination of paths, rocks, dirt and some pretty steep & narrow areas with drop offs! The views were just wonderful and we took our time (taking breaks as my legs began to really feel that 2000' steep descent!).
As we got further along our path began to follow a levada (irrigation channel) as we continued to descend down into the city.
The views were just so stunning as we climbed down very narrow, steep walkways that led past people's front doors and beautiful little gardens.
We rewarded ourselves by having a cold drink at a rooftop bar ending a spectacular day.
