Hiking the Tallest Peak in Madeira

Getting a chance to hike Pico Ruivo in Madeira is totally weather dependent since it's often shrouded in clouds or fog, but with a clear day it's so worth it! I'm including images of both times we've done it. The route is around 3.5 miles roundtrip with 1,527 feet of elevation gain.

The Best Time to Hike This.

During our two month stay we found the best time was first thing in the morning before those incredible clouds began to swiftly roll in and cover everything up. That meant we tried to start hiking as close to 9 am as possible which also worked well since this is a popular activity so the parking lot fills up.

Enjoy a Mountain Cafe

If you've got time be sure to pop into the stunning Achada do Teixeira - Mountain Spot Café for a cup of something warm (or yummy piece of cake) and to use their restroom for 50 cents.

It also makes the drive worth it even if you arrive to discover the weather is quickly changing for the worse. The second time we came to hike with Kim it was pretty sunny, but within minutes the clouds rolled in, creating a rainbow, and filled in everything around us. We decided to enjoy the café instead, determined to return another day to try again. For the effort we wanted her to experience the sweeping views instead of just looking out at a blanket of white clouds.

Description of the Hike

The route begins to immediately climb, but it's not steep and instead just a steady rise. There's also so much to see on either side of the well maintained trail that it keeps you busy as you continue to gain elevation.

The middle of the hike is quite rolling with opportunities to enjoy the blue water beyond the green mountains and plenty of places to stop and take breaks. Sections of the path are often wet here due to all the moisture rolling around.

Then you begin climbing to reach the most incredibly unexpected café! Not sure how they get supplies to this place but WOW.....one of the coolest places to stop for a coffee, cold drink or a sweet treat. You can also pay 50 cents to use the bathroom.

You've Reached the Peak!

Then it's the last push to get to the top, at 6,106 feet, where there are a couple of different platforms as well as a pretty large area where you can wander a bit or plop down to rest (or eat a packed lunch). If it's clear there are panoramic views in every direction. It's pretty amazing to look down and see parts of the trail that you just climbed and to realize you are higher than Denver (5,279) while still looking out at that blue ocean!!!

You May Have Clouds on Your Return

Both times we've done this hike the clouds moved in around 11 a.m. so starting early meant it was spectacular on our ascent and during our time at the peak. The difference in weather on the way back provided super pretty lighting and it didn't bother us that our views disappeared since we had enjoyed them on the way up and this provided a new perspective for our return.

We're just crazy about this vertical island.
