We spent a week exploring the various trails in Palo Duro Canyon State Park which is located in the Texas Panhandle
Did you know that this is the second largest canyon in the U.S.? It's 12o miles long, up to 20 miles wide (in some areas) and around 820 feet deep.
We stayed in the Juniper Campground which was wonderful. We had plenty of room around us as to not feel completely crowded and it was right in the heart of the canyon. Our site had water/electric.
We had wild turkeys come through the campground a couple of times which was so cool!
The first big hike we did was The Lighthouse Trail which was gorgeous. It's probably the most popular trail in the park and we were glad to do it on a quieter day. Other times we drove past this the parking/streets around it were PACKED so try not to hit this on a weekend! The red rock, green juniper/cactus were striking. I imagine when the leaves are all out on the trees it's probably really spectacular, but that also means it's going to be hotter. We had incredibly perfect weather (in the 60's) to hike/bike in. With the sun beating down and very little shade it felt warmer (more like 70's) and was very comfortable for outdoor recreation. Hiking back out we had the sun behind us shining on the red rocks and it was stunning.
Some cool panorama pictures....
And guess who ran through the campground around the RV? A Greater Roadrunner! I grabbed my camera and was able to get a few pictures capturing some of his amazing coloring. He stopped long enough to hold up his tail for a minute then headed off.
Nice! Looks like a beautiful park.
