The amazing Spring display in Gunlock State Park only happens when there is enough water in the reservoir to overflow the banks. Due to prolonged drought, in this part of the state, it's not something that happens every year. This winter the area had unprecedented amounts of rain & snow which meant spectacular runoff.
The reservoir was super high and it was astonishing to watch it rush over the spillway forming multiple falls in every direction.
We loved climbing around the large boulders which provided very pretty views in every direction.
Tips: When the falls are running this is a very popular place to visit and can get quite crowded so arriving early or later in the day, and visiting on weekdays, might work better if you're trying to avoid crowds! The waterfalls are within Gunlock State Park, which is a fee area. There are pay stations for guests to pay the entrance fee. Utah State Parks annual day-use passes are also accepted. During the summer kayak rentals are available at the main gate to use on the reservoir.
Safety Tips: The rocks are slippery when wet and every year there are medical emergencies and rescues from people having slipped into the water as well as cliff jumping. The pools have hidden rocks and determining the water depth is challenging. We recommend wearing shoes with good traction and to exert caution when deciding where to explore.
