On days when we aren't driving somewhere else on the island we enjoy exploring around town. Here's some cool things to do we've enjoyed during our two months in Madeira.
Climb steps for views
One day we started climbing a set of stairs that just kept going up to reach the wonderful Miradouro da Achada where we enjoyed seeing Funchal from a new perspective.
Tour an incredible Hotel Garden
Then we stopped at the luxurious Quinta Jardins do Lago Hotel for a coffee and ended up getting a outside tour from the manager. He walked us all around their gorgeous gardens which are set on a hill. They are working toward being designated as a botanical hotel so the variety of plants was really amazing and he introduced us to their resident 66 year old Galapagos Tortoise - Columbo.
Explore alleyways
Afterwards we explored some very narrow walkways between houses and peeked over rooftops to see the bay. There are plenty of these all over the old part of town to wander.
Look back on Funchal
Other times we enjoy walking along the waterfront and finding cool spots to plop down like here where we love looking over at the mountains and bright Forte de São Tiago.
Eat Yummy Food and Walk the Pretty Cobblestone
Of course there's cobblestone artwork to soak up, views from the balcony (in all sorts of different lighting) and delicious food at places like Prima Caju or Three House Restaurant.
