Fun things to do in Northeast Mallorca

We took a day to explore this quieter part of Mallorca and discovered some great things to see and do. It took us about an hour to drive from Palma and we passed lots of farms, a few towns, sheep and more open stretches as it's flatter through this central part of the island.

Cave Tour

This region has a few different caves you can visit and we decided to try the Coves d'Artà which is located near the small coastal resort town of Canyamel. The drive here was really pretty with beautiful homes nestled around gorgeous coves and sandy beaches. We reached a small upper parking area and walked our way toward the caves.

It was kind of pricey to do the 40 minute tour at 15 euros each but we decided to splurge to try it since they all seemed comparably priced. We bought our ticket and waited outside until all of the previous group had exited the cave. They rang a bell to indicate when they were ready for the next group and it was only us and one other family! That meant we didn't feel rushed which was nice as our knowledgable tour guide moved us steadily through the extensive network of caves. It was quite astonishing and beautiful (despite the over the top moment where they turned on the light show/music) and some of the chambers were quite large. The formations were such interesting shapes and some were millions of years old! Despite many being covered in soot, from earlier people using torches to light their way, we still saw many different colors.

See views from a Lighthouse

After visiting the caves we drove to Far de Capdepera which is at the easternmost point of the island and has been operating since 1861. It was a clear day so we could look across to see the island of Menorca. The road to reach the lighthouse took us through pine forests and lots of curves and then we reached a small parking area. There were a few trails so we wandered a bit to catch some views and different perspectives. The lighthouse wasn't open for visitors but we thoroughly enjoyed the setting and panoramic views.

Castell de Capdepera

This is a castle on top of a hill in this same area that offers great views. We had meant to make our way up there but ran out of time and instead just got to see it as we drove by! Looks like it would be worth visiting!

The caves look SO cool!! How wild about the soot from torches back in the day. 😳

It was really a great experience to walk through them and I couldn't believe how large some of the areas were.
