There are lots of fun things to see walking around this beautiful city and a number of cool neighborhoods. Here were some of our favorites:
Santa Catalina
This is a former fishing barrio that has several things we really enjoyed seeing and our walk there took us past lots of luxury shopping, pretty archways and landmark architecture.
We loved seeing the Three windmills of Es Jonquet which are historic flour windmills that date back to somewhere between the 16-19th century and have been preserved smack dab in the middle of modern buildings.
It's always fun to find urban parks and the Parc de Sa Feixina was a great one that had a lots of areas to wander and a wonderful green landscaped section that ran next to a waterway and some old bridges.
We ended our time here with a scrumptious brunch at El Perrito - Brunch & Coffee.
La Lonja
This area is part of the Old Town of Palma and filled with lots of narrow streets, restaurants, cool historic buildings, and plenty of places to grab a drink. We enjoyed walking around the outside of the contemporary museum which offers some great views and interesting artwork on their free outside terrace. It was fun to walk along the palm tree lined Paseo MarÃtimo across from the harbor and we loved going inside the Llotja de Palma which was built between 1420 and 1452 and was the headquarters of the Merchants’ College. The day we were there it was open and free to enter. We enjoyed some appetizers at Taqueria Manataco.
Plaça de Cort - Calle de Sant Miquel
This is a busy shopping area filled with lots of luxury brand stores, beautiful little shops, narrow walkways, bakeries, Plaza Mayor, interesting architecture, landmarks and plenty of outside places to sit. We returned to wander here multiple times and it never got old.
One of our favorite places to stop for a goodie was Fika Farina. They have a variety of scrumptious rolls to choose from (my favorite was the cardamom).
Area around the Banys Àrabs
This is the oldest part of the city dating back to the time of the Arabs & Moors and it's wonderful to just explore the narrow alleys and streets. The outer areas here are much quieter than the main shopping sections and we loved the beautiful arches, churches and stonework.
Visiting the preserved Arab Baths was a cool experience as they are some of the few remains of the Arab city of Medina Mayurqa and date back to between the 10th-12th century! It's not very big and there was a 2.50 euro fee, but we enjoyed walking around the beautiful garden and into the structures and found it worthwhile.
Other Favorite Palma Food Stops:
PaneNostro - A wonderful bakery with lots of organic bread options all made with various types of wheat.
Arabay Coffee - a great coffee shop with inside and outside seating.
Panaderia S'Estació - Bakery full of all types of goodies, yummy pot pies & empanadas, which we packed often for our daily outings. We also loved the Mallorcan brown bread. They have a glass section on the floor where you can watch the goodies being made!
