South Padre Island: Cold Birds

South Padre Island, Texas during the big freeze!

We hadn't seen any pelicans at all after arriving which was super weird. But it was really cold with high winds so we figured they were hunkered down somewhere. One day we drove to see if we could find them and saw this group tucked in behind a dock area which made for a windbreak. We sat in the car and I took a few pictures as it was way too cold to stand outside.

Another afternoon I walked out to catch these pictures of the Kildeer & Least Sandpipers as they were looking for food in a protected cove. Didn't last long because my fingers felt like ice cubes pretty quickly. I'm just amazed at the Kildeer's incredible eyes.

One day when the wind had died down a little I walked out to the docks by our RV Park. I had fun watching these male/female Redhead ducks as they stayed close to the shore in a small bay. As I sat on the dock I captured images of the birds as they ran all around me.

On a windy afternoon we walked out on the Laguna Madre Trail. Out by the bay there was absolutely nothing except a sea turtle which got rescued and carried next door into the convention center. Tucked into one of the more protected areas was this stunning Great Blue Heron trying to stay out of the wind.

Here's a cool video and you can hear the strong wind blowing as he grooms himself.
